SEND Seminar Programme Session #3 – Pathological Demand Avoidance

In our third session, we will focus on Supporting Students with PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance).

PDA is widely understood to be a profile on the autism spectrum, involving the avoidance of everyday demands and the use of ‘social’ strategies as part of this avoidance.

This session will provide teaching and support staff with effective strategies to ensure they can support students with PDA in order to help them meet their potential and manage their behaviour.

Staff will gain the following understanding:

  • the meaning of Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA)
  • the impact PDA has on a person and how they might be supported.
  • the key principles of positive behaviour management when working with those with PDA
  • the effects that PDA has on lifelong learning and social opportunities and how to reduce the impact of this
